engrXiv, the open archive of engineering, has moved on from its temporary home and nestled in more closely within the Open Science Framework. With this migration, submissions to engrXiv are now done via the web interface rather than by email! As we move into this new phase, we are counting on the engineering community to continue to submit your work to help us with our mission of providing free and fast access to the products of engineering scholarship. All works submitted to engrXiv will be indexed by the OSF preprint service which is part of the SHARE network that includes preprints from arXiv, PeerJ, PsyArXiv, and SocArXiv among others. In addition to posting manuscripts, we encourage you to link your preprints to other research outputs such as code, solid models, or anything else. If your research artifacts are housed in an OSF project, this connection can be easily made.

As we continue to develop this service for the betterment of the engineering field, we are looking for your help in broadening the reach of engrXiv. So spread the word and encourage your colleagues to post their work and, if you can, make a contribution to the engrXiv fund, managed by the Stout University Foundation, to help us be more effective advocates for openness in engineering.

Things are chugging along behind the scenes at engrXiv. OSF has rolled out their general preprint service which both allows uploading of preprints and also indexes and aggregates preprints from a variety of other servers. Preprints submitted to engrXiv are included in this index and are discoverable from that service. This service will soon provide the backend upon which engrXiv is built when we move out of beta.

If you are looking for opportunities to contribute to the development of engrXiv, we have two ongoing activities at the moment that you can help out with.

1) engrXiv will use the Bepress taxonomy as a means of categorizing submissions to the server. This categorization affects both submissions to the server and searching for preprints on the server. To make this as useful as possible to the engineering community, we’d like your input on the structure and organization of this taxonomy. Is there anything we should add or remove? Anything that should be organized differently? You can view the taxonomy on our GitHub page and submit any comments or suggestions using the issue tracker.

2) We would like to create LaTeX and Word templates that can be provided to users as they draft their papers for engrXiv. These templates would not be a requirement for submission but would purely be a service provided to those who lack an alternative template. If you would like to contribute, please use the engrXiv-template GitHub repo to get started.

Thanks to a new collaboration between the the Center for Open Science and Overleaf announced yesterday, authors who draft their papers on Overleaf can now submit them directly to engrXiv from the Overleaf website. For those of you who are not familiar with Overleaf, it is a free service that lets you create, edit, and share your scientific ideas easily online using LaTeX right within your web browser. LaTeX takes care of the typesetting and formatting for you and Overleaf keeps you from having to install and configure LaTeX yourself.

Submitting couldn’t be easier. Once you are finished authoring your paper on Overleaf, just click the “Journals & Services” tab at the top of the page, scroll down and select engrXiv.

On the next window click, “Submit Article to engrXiv” and you are all set.

We are really excited about this collaboration and how easy it makes it to get your article up on engrXiv as soon as it is ready.
